Anyone know the best way to sort out long term insomnia without medication??

I have been an insomniac for nearly 8 years, my logest stint awake to date was 3 weeks with the whole of 2 hours of sleep dispersed throughout.. I just can't fall asleep untill around 5-6am and even then i'm usualy awake by 8am, I have a 2 year old who runs me ragged so when I fall asleep its a very restless sleep of thinking about the day to come, with him being so young, i don't want to take the doctors advice and use sleeping pills or valium, it's bad enough taking 4 different pain killers for torn cartiledge in my knee, i dont want him seeing me as a pill head as he grows up. I've tried several natural herbal remedies like Valerina, which worked for the first 3-7 days, then just stopped having any affect….can SOMEONE please help me?!?!?

drinking milk is suppose to be good,I've read that it releases a chemical in the brain that make you sleepy.

You are right medication is not the way and when one sees questions like this and reads the answers given which often range from take this substance or that (especially when you have stated no medication) it makes you wonder where peoples heads are at. They seem to think that because it don't need a prescription that it ain't a drug and it is comforting to note that no one has invoked the glory of the lord – I guess in this situation they are struggling to find a way to somehow give him a mention – which puts me one up on them.

None of which answers your question, and while most of these are trying to be helpful, the ones who don't mention some kind of medication go with therapy, which is very impractical especially with a baby in the mix.

The fact is that doing things like reading or doing exercises actually are more likely to wake you up than put you to sleep and the other things like not drinking tea or coffee or eating after a certain time usually about 8:00 are good but have to be adhered to, it ain't no use doing things during the week and deciding you want to go out at the weekend because you deserve a break.

You have to train yourself to become a regular sleeper. Routine, is the key word. In your bedroom there should be no TV, books, papers, PC or any other distractions. The bedroom has to be associated with sleep, nothing else. I know that this is hard with a baby but you have to do the best you can with what you have. Pick a time to go to bed and stick to it, light out and breath deeply and regularly. If after 20 minutes or so if you are not asleep get up and have a glass of water give it 5 or 10 minutes and then start the process again.

It is actually better if you don't have a clock in the bedroom either, because you have to concentrate on sleep, breathing, and nothing else, and you have to do this every night without fail or excuses – after a while you will fall into a pattern of drifting off to sleep. It becomes a habit.

I accept that this will be treated as utter rubbish but you have asked and I have answered. There is an old saying that states that nothing worthwhile is ever easy but that doesn't have to be the case, just persevere, and don't give up after just a couple of days. Best of luck!

sounds to me like you are really stressed out and that is what is keeping you awake. i have this problem…..but for not as long as you so I can only begin to imagine how frustrated u must feel. When I go to bed at night, thoughts continuously run through my head. Usually I end up falling asleep a couple hours later but some nites are worse then others and I do not fall asleep until an hour or so before I need to wake up. Truthfully the only remedy I have found (becuz I do not want to take pills either) is to talk to someone about all the things that are bothering me so that they do not run through my mind all nite long. Also, I have to keep reminding myself that there are certain things that I do not have control over so there is no point in worrying. Also, maybe you should take your child to your moms house or a trusting adults house for a few days just so you can get your sleep schedule back on track…a few good nites sleep will really help you out….just make sure you go to bed at about the same time every nite but do not go to sleep until you are tired. Reading a book before bed….while in bed….will help relax you and make you sleepy. Also a nice warm bubble bath with lavender scented bubble bath will help as well. Good luck.

I have anxiety and depression and having been trying an alternative therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique and it has really worked for me and helped me a lot. Since using it I have been feeling a lot better. It's very good at getting rid of all kinds of negative emotions and dealing with all kinds of issues quickly. It does sound bizarre but does work. Might be something that can help you. These are some links about it. If type Insomnia in the first link emofree.com's search engine you should find lots of articles about EFT being used people with Insomnia.

Another possiblity that you might have to consider is bipolar disorder. Staying awake for long periods is one of the symptoms, but of course, you must have had at least one depressive episode. Try googling for a free quiz to see how you rate.

Hello my friend, I hear where your coming from i also have insomnia. I have tried everything myself short of the drugs or doctos. There are times i do get to sleep but its not much only about 2 hours a day for the last few years.
Go to a local walmart and in the spice section you will see a seasoning called Anise. Get two table spoons and a couple cups of water and bring it to a boil. The water will turn dark yellow. Pour you a cup and add sugar about 2 tea spoons.
Anise can be used for over 25 different reasons. Its effect can help you relax as a mild seditive, or it also works to flush your system of toxins. It can be used with young children for cholic, ear infections and so on. I have never used anything but this and it works for me. I have NEVER been to a doctr short of broken bones.
Try it drink as much as you like it will not have any side affects. About 5 dollars a jar. It also works to reduce fever and upset stomach. I hope you the best and it works for you.

exercise my friend. since you are already up early in the morn. go running or jogging. later in the evening go running or jogging and/or work out with weights vigorousley. do not drink any caffein if possible. you can have one or 2 cups of coffee in the morning if you have to but thats it. if you must drink soft drinks make sure it;s sprite , 7up etc. also no sugar in the evening either. you could also try a low carb diet as well. low carb diets have a tendancy to make a lot of people crash and thats exactly what you need right now. try a low carb diet with vigorous exercise and i can almost garuantee you will sleep.

I have the same problem too.
Tried almost everything – from prescribed drugs/health supplements to aroma therapy.

Just wanna share with you. My friend from China gave me some foot soak herbs. These herbs are from Tibet and supposed to help blood circulation and promote sleep. I have tried a few nights and will continue since its really soothing. Hopefully can see the effect soon.

Insomnia is on this list, others have mentioned conditions which are also on this list.

    http://www.ylcf.org/hormone-imbalance/06...

Miriam wrote her story in 1997 and revised it in 2002.

Stress –> Hormone Imbalance –> "Health Issue"

As a preliminary do the on line hormone tests at http://www.hormoneprofile.com or http://www.johnleemd.com

If they recommend you obtain hormones please have a saliva test done see http://www.npis.info or http://www.salivatest.com. A saliva test will check out active hormones something that blood tests do not.

If a hormone is suggested by the saliva test please take the dose suggested for you. Size 10 shoes are not twice as good if you have size 5 feet.
The WHO (World Health Organisation) uses saliva tests.

A transcript of a John Lee talk – this explains why for hormones a blood test is worthless and much more
    http://www.keepsmilin.com/transcriptdrle...

Blood tests find hormones, but they are the ones on their way out of the body. They do not give the active hormone levels.

Search the web for "natural progesterone insomnia" and you will find many pages read and carefully select.

There is a list of doctors at http://www.npis.info who are aware of the benefits of natural progesterone they may be more helpful than your GP. You are about to educate your GP :-)

Natural progesterone means natural to humans i.e. identical to that produced by the human body.

For a good explanation of how vital natural progesterone is to humans see

    http://www.hormoneprofile.com/howhormone...
and other pages on this site

After having done a saliva test any progesterone you buy must be natural progesterone USP. USP means United States Pharmacopoeia. Wild yam is that Wild Yam the body will not convert it to progesterone.

Do not take fake progesterone/progestins manufactured by the drug companies they will be of NO benefit.

Men only need about half the natural progesterone that women do, but we need it all the same.

The books were written for women, for a man I'd suggest Optimal Health Guidelines as a starter, then possibly the "menopause" one

Hope this of benefit to you …

I can only make a couple of general suggestions. You are very wise to want to avoid sleeping pills of ALL types.

I feel like I am hitting my head against a wall, when I advise other DOCTORS as well as patients, that they do not work, and few professionals realise that you can become hooked on them in as little as 3 days! Ultimately studies confirm that patients on long term sleeping pills, ultimately only sleep an average of 30 minutes more than their pre-medication state, but can't sleep at all without them!

Never read, exercise or watch TV for at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. Take a bath with Lavender oil, and put a few drops on the pillow, and finally try a warm, caffeine free drink, before retiring.

If you have the time and money you can go to one of those sleep centres. They'll at least be able to tell you if there's a medical/physical reason for your problem or if it's just stress.

You sound like you need help and assuming your an American if you go to a regular doctor they will just throw medications at you randomly.

  12. admin says:
Have you tried melatonin. Take 2 over the counter supplement pills one hour before bed time and it will help you get tired. Also pay attention to sleep hygiene- no caffeine after 2 pm, make sure your room is cool and quiet, maybe read for 20 min or so to let your brain slow down. If you cannot sleep get up after 30 minutes and do something boring and then try again. If you have been having this problem for a long time your body may associate the bed with a place you cannot sleep. Try making your bed up so you sleep at the foot to change it up a bit.
  13. admin says:
you could try therapy….it sounds crazy but sometimes you have emotional/stress problems that manifest themselves in other ways (insomnia, back pain, etc) and once you work them out, your other problems get better.
  14. admin says:
i have a few ideas. i don't want to insult your intelligence but i'd regret not asking you, in case no one has.
do you drink caffeine after 5:00pm?
have you asked your dr if the meds you DO take can be causing this? are there any alternatives? also, can dr prescribe something for pain and/or insomnia that's NOT addictive? surely there is something available. would you consider therapy?

i'm guessing you don't want your son to think of you as an addict. people who take tons of vitamins do not have this concern. it's not about pills. it's about treating him with love and respect. i have to take meds for depression and have explained to my 8 year olds that if someone takes medicine that they do NOT need, they will get sick. it makes sense to them.

i pray/meditate my self to sleep every night. i'm told i go to sleep very quickly. also, i do my best to be the most loving person i can be everyday, so i can look myself in the mirror and sleep at night.

    God bless.
